The Historical Sky Screen Spreads Tall Tales, While Wild History Runs Amok

Also known as: The Spirit Realm Repairman: From the Start, I Tore Down Chang’an City

Liu Ye, a key member of a gang, is hit and killed by a truck, but the Spirit Realm Overlord System captures his soul, rebuilds his body, and turns him into a “spacetime repairman” in the spirit realm. His first assignment is to fish the amnesiac Crown Prince Li Chengqian, who goes by the alias Li Gaoming, out of the spirit realm’s pool. The two become partners. The System opens their acupoints and grants Liu Ye the ability to refine and cultivate through “equivalent transmutation,” while Li Gaoming gains the Qi-cultivation power of “peerless blades of energy.”

Their first stop is the first year of the Zhenguan era in the Tang Dynasty. To earn the crucial “incense points” needed to unlock their abilities, they have no choice but to sign an outrageously expensive work contract with Li Shimin, paying off a debt of 5.87 million strings of cash incurred when their demon-catching operation accidentally demolished half of Chang’an.

And so the Tang court gains two senior officials in the Department of Affairs with utterly bizarre styles. Liu Ye casually transmutes suits, leather shoes, roasted tea, and fine liquor, exuding such a flaunting air that it shocks the ages. Li Gaoming is ruthless and says little, sweeping through the court with just one word: “Silence.”

Li Shimin and his trusted ministers experience, through equal parts pain and delight, the destructive and creative power of a “human-shaped natural disaster.” Tearing down houses is just the warm-up; flying on swords is part of everyday life.

Liu Ye sticks to the spirit realm’s laws, refusing to casually pass on magical artifacts and immortal arts, yet he can’t resist secretly using knowledge from the future to give the Tang Dynasty a stylish upgrade. Meanwhile, the real identity of the amnesiac Li Gaoming has become an unspoken secret among the court.

This is a cheerful story about two living dead partners working off their debt in the Tang Dynasty, accidentally sending history in a strange new direction along the way. Starting in Chang’an, their repair orders will take them to the Han, Song, and Ming dynasties as well.
