It begins on a rainy night. A man who covets Gu Cuilian’s beauty sneaks into her home under cover of darkness. Caught completely off guard, she has her clothes torn off. In her panic, she uses a pair of scissors to mutilate the man. The string of retaliations that follows leaves her struggling to cope... Orphaned from a young age, she cannot bear to see several children who have suffered as she did endure the same hardships. She resolutely takes on the role of their mother. To make sure they have enough to eat and warm clothes to wear, she farms, sells ice cream, makes tofu... She is willing to try anything that might improve their lives. Though hard, their days are sweet, and she finds them full and satisfying. As the children grow up, however, marriage becomes one seemingly insurmountable divide after another between Gu Cuilian and the children... Beginning in the 1980s, this story spans forty years and strives to portray the real lives of women in Northeast China during that decade. The story has both sweetness and heartache, with twists and turns, and a satisfying ending.
