The Abandoned Consort in the Cold Palace Takes the Emperor Out for Hot Pot

As red oil bubbled in a crackle-glazed porcelain bowl, a secret that had crossed the boundary between life and death awoke deep in the Cold Palace. Frost and snow covered the tiled roofs, and wild grass stood like spears. She had once been a leading light in modern medicine, but now she was trapped among crumbling walls. If fate had cast her into the abyss, she would use needles as swords and medicine as shields, carving out a chance to survive in this tightly controlled dynasty.

When she first arrived at the Cold Palace, rotten leaves danced with dust, yet she planted the first sprig of mint by a dry well. Her hands had once held a scalpel; now they turned soil and made medicine. She blended blemish cream to the color of moonlight and kneaded whitening balm to a pear-blossom white, quietly supplying the cosmetics market deep within the palace. The turning point began with a bowl of spicy hot pot. Beef tallow bubbled with Sichuan peppercorns and dried chilies, its fragrance rising straight to the imperial study. After Emperor Xiao Jin tasted it, he was no longer satisfied with the bland dishes of the old order, and he began listening to her talk of "science" and "logic."

But every step toward a new life came at a price. The consorts spun a web of intrigue, intent on plunging her back into obscurity. Court officials questioned her remedies, dismissing the new medicine as heresy. She sparred with envoys in debate, her words flashing like swords. When plague swept through the city, she went to the affected areas herself, boiling herbs until the hours slipped away in her hands. She had never relied on a golden finger, only on her determination and knowledge, to tear a crack of light through the iron curtain of feudalism.

When the old order collides with new ideas, and one person's strength shakes a thousand years of ritual and law, who can say that change is not another form of salvation?
