In 1980, Chen Sanyu, an antique dealer at Beijing's Liulichang, acquired a sinister object: a bronze soul-summoning bell used by corpse-driving ritualists in western Hunan. To uncover the truth, he had no choice but to head south to the Yuan River, where he stumbled into a deadly scheme a thousand years in the making.
