Synopsis

"Kong Yiji" is a short story written by Lu Xun in 1919 and included in the novel collection "The Scream". The story is set in the Xianheng Hotel, and tells the tragic fate of the down-and-out scholar Kong Yiji through the perspective of a bystander "I" (the boy). Kong Yiji was a victim of the imperial examination system. He talked a lot about "what's wrong", wore tattered gowns, and considered himself a "scholar". However, he was reduced to the margins of society because he was unable to obtain merit. He stole books and was severely beaten, arguing that "stealing books is not stealing". In the end, his legs were broken for stealing, and he disappeared silently amidst everyone's ridicule. Through this image, the novel reveals the devastation of human nature caused by the feudal imperial examination system and the numbness and indifference of the people at the bottom of society.
