In the late Qing Dynasty, an inconspicuous secondhand bookstore called "Oriental Bookstore" opened on an old street by the Suzhou River.
There are many books and dust in the shop, and few customers. The boss has a gentle temper, but he can understand words that many people cannot.
He has a maid, Ah Xing, who has followed him since childhood, taking care of the shop, making tea, and burning incense. Neighbors said there was something wrong with the bookstore:
The cat would stand on top of the bookshelf in the middle of the night and look at the statues of gods, the stone statues in the shrine would sigh, and there was a dog at the door that always refused to leave.
Some people say that the boss is a literate Taoist priest, some say that he is a fortune teller, and some say that he is nothing but reads too many books and is eaten up by the words.
