One stormy night, Sun Guoqing goes to check on the dangerous old bridge at the east end of the village. He is swept away by the flood while trying to save a child who fell into the water. When he wakes, he discovers that he has gained the ability to “sense all things,” allowing him to perceive the “voices” of plants, animals, and the land.
- Using his ability, he discovers what is making the old pear tree in his yard sick, saves it, and enjoys a bountiful harvest. He begins to believe his power is real, and eventually leads Kuaile Village to a comfortable life.
