Some people, like disabled people, are born with a lack of perception of kindness and beauty. At first, I was horrified when I saw the self-narrative descriptions of several characters. They were too straightforward and the characters all had their own personalities. Especially Cathy, Adam's obsession with her and her failure to recover feel like a dark novel. Unexpectedly, Samuel's appearance was like a light shining on their family, as well as the wise Lao Li, a very authentic Chinese image. Adam chose "I can" in his sick relationship with Cathy. Are the personalities of the brothers Arun and Gal different from each other, like the control group that almost all of us are born with? You will love him and hate him, wish him well and wish him destruction. Is it just jealousy? Far more than that, everything is hidden in complex human nature. No matter how you are born, "I can" is still an eternal theme. People always have choices.

Steinbeck, who was jumping in the time tunnel, struck out every bit of the Salinas Valley and the people living in this land with his hammer and stick, each person's life, a different life, and a product of different times. Each time they impact the soul, wash away sins, and state the facts. This book transcends all of Steinbeck's books in that the difference between a lie and a story is that a story uses the guise and veneer of truth for the amusement of the listener and the storyteller. There is no gain or loss in the story itself. But lying is a means of gaining advantage or escaping disadvantage. In the end, time leaves behind not only sadness, aging and death, but also beauty, unforgettableness and memories. Dull, uneventful time has no duration at all. Time interspersed with interest, sadness or joy can last long in memory. Time cannot last in peace and quiet. Starting from nothing is not time at all. Human life and thought, desire and ambition, greed and cruelty, kindness and generosity, cannot escape the net of good and evil. This is our only story. After a person dusts off the dust and debris of his life, he will be left with these serious and clear questions: Am I good or evil in this life? Am I doing a great job—or a terrible job? The brave, upright, officious philosopher-farmer Samuel Hamilton. Some people die, but they live in people's hearts forever, and Samuel is one of these people. Being able to help others is his happiness and the meaning of immortality. Cassie only understands the weaknesses of human nature and exploits them, but she does not understand the strengths of human nature. Hate cannot exist alone. It must be triggered, driven, stimulated by love.

He is also my favorite character in this book. Tom Hamilton, who loved inventions just like his father, caused the death of his sister Desi due to misuse of drugs. He was so deeply blamed that he could not extricate himself, and finally committed suicide by drinking a bullet. His tragedy also foreshadowed the theme of "choice and redemption" in the novel. Adam's kindness is never a bottom-line compromise, but he still chooses to stick to goodwill after seeing the evil of human nature. In the end, his affirmation of Gal before his death also completed his own practice of "choice". Aaron's tragedy is a metaphor for pure kindness that is divorced from reality and vulnerable to the complexity of human nature. The book mentions that "people are trapped - trapped in their lives, trapped in their thoughts, trapped in their desires and ambitions, trapped in their greed and cruelty, trapped in their kindness and generosity, trapped in a big web of good and evil." It summarizes the fate of all the characters in the book, and also raises a profound question about human nature. The experience of the characters in the novel and the core concept of "Timsher" provide the possibility of a breakthrough for this "trapped". A book well worth reading

His cheerful, open-minded and helpful character has won unanimous praise from local residents, and everyone likes him very much. Samuel loves this land. It carries his personal value and is where his soul lies. If he leaves here, he will lose his soul and his life will not be long. Adam was kind-hearted by nature, but lost his mother when he was young. His father was strict, which led to him lacking parental love. Although his younger brother Charles loved Adam, he beat him violently because he was jealous that his father loved Adam more. Then Adam was sent to the military camp by his father. He spent his military life and homeless life almost numbly. After returning home, he still wandered around aimlessly with no expectations for the future. He lived just to live, until he met Cathy, mistakenly thinking that she was his light, and he had a goal in life, so he took Cathy to the Salinas Valley, dreaming of living a small life of his own. Cathy's resolute departure after giving birth caused him to be depressed for several years. After seeing Cathy again, he recognized her true face, gained relief, and cheered up. As the children grew up, the previous generation's struggle for father's love was repeated. In the end, Adam suffered a stroke and became paralyzed after his son Allen joined the army and died in the war. Cathy is a villain heroine. She can be said to be a mentally retarded person, because there is no love and kindness in her heart, only evil and cruelty, so the world she understands is all about the dark side. She is deeply afraid of this world that she thinks is only evil. She is good at seeing people's hearts and uses this trait to control others to gain a sense of security. When she could no longer bear the fear, she chose to commit suicide. Lao Li is a servant of the Trask family. He is wise, loyal, restrained, and sober. He likes to think and has the temperament of a philosopher. He diligently took care of the Trask family for many years and established a deep relationship with them. Although he thought about opening a bookstore to realize his dream, he ultimately chose to continue living with them because he could not let go of his relationship with the Trask family. As the next generation of the Trask family, Caleb inherited part of Cathy's character and was also good at using people's hearts to achieve his goals. He hurt Allen because he was jealous of his father's preference for Allen, but he would feel deeply remorseful for his evil thoughts, because he loved his father and brother, and he and his mother were different after all. The essence of this book is that Lao Li reveals to Samuel and Adam the meaning of "Timsher" in the Bible. It is not "you must" which represents a command, nor is it "you must" which symbolizes fate. It is "you can". Adam said "Timsher" at the end of the story, indicating that he had forgiven Caleb and given him the power to choose. The most important thing about being a human being is choice. This is what this book wants to tell us. In fact, good and evil, love and hate, strength and weakness are all choices. Everything is in your hands, and your life is determined by yourself.

I was confused at first, but the more I watched, the more I liked it, the context gradually became clear, and the direction became clear. The distortion and normality of human nature are all written through the characters of the story, although it is a little slow.
