"Gongshui Family" tells a story that takes place by the Gongshui River in Xuan'en County, Hubei Province. In the early days of the Anti-Japanese War, Dou Yuhua, the daughter of the wealthy local emperor Dou Canghai, despite the strong opposition of her parents, resolutely participated in the "Shame House Adult Literacy Class" set up by Zhang Nanxian, then director of the Finance Department of the Hubei Provincial Government of the Kuomintang, and had a bizarre and tortuous love story with Liu Qing, a farmer's son from Qinglong Mountain in Enshi. The novel is based on the history of Xuan'en and takes the growth of Dou Yuhua and Liu Qing as the main line. It describes the twists and turns of the Tujia people's struggle despite hardships, dangers, and violence.
