It began in the unacknowledged Red Name Zone, on a street regarded as a dumping ground. The people who lived there made it their home and named it "Crossroads."
Crossroads was the original site of the virus outbreak. Most of its residents were beggars, so when a flock of crows fell from the sky like rain, one after another, no one hesitated. The long-starved people scrambled for the crows' flesh and blood.
It was late spring in the twenty-fifth year of the century when night fell.
The transformation began that day.
Blue-black veins, like cracks in porcelain, spread from a single point. The howls sounded like those of beasts gone mad. One, two, three...
