Modern Literature: Wu Yue Chun Qiu

A historical work that records the historical events of Wu and Yue during the Spring and Autumn Period. The author is Zhao Ye of the Eastern Han Dynasty. There were originally twelve volumes, but now there are ten volumes. The first five chapters focus on the Wu Kingdom, beginning with Wu Taibo and detailing the journey to Fucha; the last five chapters focus on the Yue Kingdom, recording the Yue Kingdom from its beginnings until Gou Jian's hegemony and its descendants, focusing on showing the historical facts of Wu and Yue's struggle for hegemony. The book also records many legendary plots, such as the sword-forging of the general Moye and the teaching of swords by Yue girls. In terms of compilation style, it integrates the strengths of various forms of "Historical Records" to chronicle events with a clear context. Although part of the content is fictitious due to rumors and imagination of later generations, and is accused of being close to the words of novelists, it is precisely because of this that it is highly readable and has a profound impact on later generations of literature. It is a precious classic for studying the history and culture of Wu and Yue and the development of ancient literature.
