Synopsis

Comedy + absurdity + classical Chinese + the Classic of Mountains and Seas + the bizarre + mind-blowing twists + dead-serious nonsense, plus turning all these strange ingredients into food. Anyway, come and see for yourselves. This is a brief work in classical Chinese. Though it is not written in obscure, convoluted archaic language, it captures the spirit of the strange tales of the Wei and Jin dynasties while blending in a fresh, fantastical style. Its prose cuts like a blade, stripping iron down to the bone. The “Nike Shark” is described as having “iron-cast black hooks growing from its back, carbon-fiber plates embedded in its fins like blades and halberds.” Its form hints at deeper meaning, its vigor concealing subtlety. The “Stick Man” has “rusted joints locked in the shape of a vertical line, with fiber-optic threads and bloody filaments leaking between its fingers.” Its withered appearance conceals a keen edge, its chill a note of compassion. And the “Crocodile Bomber,” with “diamond-lensed eyes set in its crocodile head, and golden rivets welded onto its scales,” uses ornate language to depict a grotesque creature, setting splendor against savagery until the reader’s head spins. The work excels at hiding true meaning within spare strokes. Rather than directly condemning consumerism, it shows a shark swallowing “likes” and gills reflecting human faces. Rather than making empty claims about the shackles of technology, it depicts a wooden man piecing together “404” and a skull falling amid a “rain of likes.” The prose has the light, unhurried grace of wild cranes and drifting clouds, yet its sinews are as firm as cast bronze and forged iron. Each sentence first seems bizarre and amusing; think on it further, and a cold sweat breaks out. For every absurdity reflects the shape of reality, and beneath the calm, dark currents surge. Brief in length but lingering in flavor, simple in words yet profound in meaning, it is like fresh ink ground on an ancient inkstone, or a wild elixir poured into an old bottle. As you open the book, watch these strange beings, with steel for skin and code for blood, glide vividly through the silences of classical prose, and see how their graceful charm pierces the fabric of modern civilization. Such brilliance can only come from a writer with a world of learning in their heart and a sharpness in their gaze.
