During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, the Lin family, a well-known weaving family in the south of the Yangtze River, and the Su family, a powerful family in the capital, became connected through a silk trade. The Lin family is famous for its double-sided silk tapestry skills, but is in crisis due to involvement in official disputes; the Su family appears to be a wealthy imperial businessman, but in fact secretly performs confidential tasks for the court.
