Love Around the Corner

Parents and elders still have considerable influence over their children's marriages. Qiu Yueye, for example, married a mama's boy at her parents' arrangement, and her birth family kept interfering as her relationship with Zhou Hongjian developed.

Divorced women still face social pressure. Although attitudes are gradually becoming more open, some people remain prejudiced against remarriage.

Marriage is regarded as a union of family interests, with factors such as family background and financial circumstances weighing heavily in the decision. When Qiu Yueye's parents learned that Zhou Hongjian was a good match, they urged the two of them to get together.

Gender Roles

The preference for sons over daughters is especially evident in rural areas. Qiu Yueye's family is like this: her parents direct more resources toward their son, while their daughter is denied the care and respect she deserves at home.

Although gender attitudes are relatively open in cities, traditional ideas about the division of gender roles persist. Men are more likely to receive recognition and support in their careers.

Friends often organize get-togethers, which serve as an important way for people to socialize and strengthen their relationships. One such gathering gives Qiu Yueye and Zhou Hongjian the chance to meet again.
