In Liue Village, deep in the mountains of southwest China, generations of villagers have worshipped a mountain god idol. A stone stele at the village entrance bears the inscription: “Six calamities, endless reincarnation. Those who seek redemption shall not pass.”
A hundred years ago, the villagers sacrificed six outsiders to the mountain god in hopes of securing favorable weather and good harvests. The sacrifice backfired, giving rise to the “Six Calamities Curse.” Every ten years, six people must die in six different horrific ways to appease the restless spirits.
