A classic novel of the Republic of China, it was adapted into a 24-episode emotional drama in 1997. The story is set in the 1930s. It focuses on newspaper employee Lin Baiping who ran away from home after discovering the affair between his wife Lin Zhihua and her best friend Bian Zhongying. However, she fell into a complicated emotional entanglement with the wealthy daughter Liu Ruyan and her ex-wife's best friend Zhang Shumin. The whole play starts with "Hongxing comes out of the wall" and unfolds a storm of love and hate that spans ethics, class and era.
Liu Ruyan, played by Zhu Yuanyuan in the play, can be called the "Republican version of the fatal woman" - from an innocent girl to falling into prostitution, from becoming a nun to killing people with a knife, her fate is extremely dramatic. While modern audiences are talking about "Love Brain" and "The Heroine's Counterattack", Liu Ruyan had already performed a more vigorous version on the screen in the 1990s.
