The Wanli Emperor's Fifteenth Year: Explained in One Book

Following the framework of Huang Renyu’s classic work, this book closely examines a slice of history from the Wanli era of the Ming dynasty, a time that seemed calm on the surface but seethed with undercurrents. Through the shifting fortunes of seven central figures, including the Wanli Emperor, Zhang Juzheng, and Hai Rui, it reveals how moral idealism and technical shortcomings worked together to strangle the prospects for reform. From the financial management flaws exposed by the collapse of Zhang Juzheng’s reforms to the paradox of Hai Rui’s honest integrity being rejected by the system; from the tragedy of Qi Jiguang’s military innovations being stifled by the civil service to the plight of Li Zhi’s intellectual enlightenment being crushed by Confucian norms, the book carefully dissects the social malady of “substituting morality for the rule of law.”

The book focuses in particular on the “insignificant year” of 1587, decoding historical details such as the succession struggle behind the emperor’s neglect of state affairs, the falsified figures hidden in the land surveys, and the imbalance between civil and military power reflected in victories over Japanese pirates. It shows how a vast empire descended into decline through systemic collapse.

Using a “big history” perspective, the book both revisits the classic arguments of "1587, A Year of No Significance" and offers an in-depth interpretation through a contemporary lens, building a bridge between historical patterns and lessons for the present.
