Qingyangzi, a graphic designer, suddenly dies of hereditary hypertension. Before his three souls can disperse, the Black and White Impermanence seize him and drag him to the underworld.
The King of Hell checks the Book of Life and Death, sees that Qingyangzi has not yet reached the end of his lifespan and has committed few sins, and, with the underworld short-staffed, sends him to the desolate, miasma-filled Abandoned Soul Abyss to serve as a clerk.
This is a place of spiritual dissolution that all ghosts avoid. While sorting through scattered scrolls, Qingyangzi unexpectedly discovers the Supreme Clarity True Scripture, which records ancient cultivation arts. From then on, he is drawn into the underworld's churning power struggles.
Ever since Lady Houtu transferred the position of Fengdu Emperor to a sage, Emperor Ziwei has nursed resentment and secretly plotted to rewrite the laws of the underworld. The Five Directional Ghost Emperors and the Ten Courts of Yama each have their own agendas, and the underworld is rife with undercurrents.
Drawing on what he has learned and the scripture's true teachings, Qingyangzi begins by building his foundation through stillness. As he cultivates qi by guarding the One, he comprehends the mysteries of the soul, and his cultivation steadily advances.
He traverses the Yellow Springs Road, the Ridge of Hounds, the Hall of Bewildering Souls, and other places, seeking the underworld's secrets between the Hall of Offerings and the Cliff of Returning Souls. As his cultivation reaches completion, he gradually becomes the focus of every faction's struggle: Ziwei wants to use his power over souls, while the sage's faction fears his ability to upend the balance.
A mysterious presence deep in the underworld is also secretly intent on killing him.
