In this world, every living being gives off a "Karmic Flame" upon death. It holds everything the deceased possessed: their obsessions, power, memories, and even fragments of their soul.
Ordinary people who touch a Karmic Flame may be cursed or have their souls corroded, while cultivators can refine it to absorb the dead person's power and even briefly manifest some of their abilities.
But if a Karmic Flame is too powerful, it may consume the one who absorbs it, turning them into a "Karmic Flame Puppet," a strange creature that wanders the world.
