Moonlight Beyond the Mountains
A decade-spanning story of innocence and regret, of a deep love left unspoken and a chance missed.
Fourteen-year-old Lin Xiaoman comes from the mountains to board at a school in the city, where she meets eighteen-year-old Chen Yuan. Pure-hearted and diligent, she looks up to him as an older brother. He has already fallen for her, but can only hide his feelings in every act of kindness.
When a sudden family crisis forces Xiaoman to return to her hometown, Chen Yuan searches for her frantically, only to learn that she has dropped out of school to work and vanished without a trace. He gets into college, yet can never forget the girl from the mountains who once smiled at him.
Years later, Xiaoman returns to the city with her fiancé to search for her missing older sister, and Chen Yuan finally learns where she is. Two days later, he leaps from a high-rise, leaving this world with an obsession no one knew about.
A few more years pass before Xiaoman accidentally learns the truth. Standing at the station where Chen Yuan used to wait for her, she seems to drift back to that snowy winter. If only she had understood his feelings back then, would things have turned out differently?
(Dedicated to the “friend” I will never see again.)
