A dynasty at the height of its power, then in decline, beset by internal strife and outside threats. The story focuses on the Bingwu year of the Qianlong reign in the Qing dynasty (1786).
This is a promising choice! The Qianlong era was hailed as a “golden age,” but by the Bingwu year (1786), Qianlong was in his later years (he was born in 1711 and was now 75). Beneath the outward prosperity, undercurrents were stirring:
Corrupt officials: Powerful ministers such as Heshen held sway, corruption was rampant, and the imperial treasury was running dry.
The first signs of rebellion: The Lin Shuangwen Rebellion broke out in Taiwan that year (1786–1788). Though its main battleground was Taiwan, it revealed popular discontent and a crisis of rule.
Social tensions: Land concentration, population pressures, rising prices, and other problems were becoming increasingly serious.
Intellectual repression: The literary inquisition reached its peak, silencing the intellectual and cultural world. This oppressive atmosphere was fertile ground for “strange tales.”
The sense of inevitable decline after a golden age: Qianlong himself had lost the drive of his earlier years. He began to crave grand achievements and indulge in pleasure. The era’s mood of “the sunset is beautiful, but dusk is near” provides a perfect stage for “strange tales,” sharply contrasting the rot of the old order with the turmoil soon to come.
"Bingwu Strange News" A dusty volume of notes about strange things reveals the strange past events of the Bingwu year. The author outlines folk legends with delicate writing style. Each story is like the cold wind blowing in the deep alleys of the old streets. The coolness penetrates into the bone marrow but is not shocking. The best part is between fiction and reality - those familiar folk details give the absurd the ground to take root. Reading late at night, I seem to hear whispers outside the paper window. Is it the lingering soul of the old days, or the echo deep in the human heart?
I finished reading it in one go. The theme of the story is novel, the plot is compact and not sloppy, the author is very imaginative, and the plot is very creative. The details are in place, making it look like a painting and very attractive. The protagonist's character is likeable, the plot advances layer by layer, and the twists and turns are surprising. It is a suspenseful and anecdotal story about the Qing Dynasty, a detective type, a relatively new subject matter, and the author writes it very vividly.
Taking the Bingwu Year of Qianlong (1786) as the stage, against the background of the era of prosperity and decline, it interweaves mystery, suspense and historical reality, and interrogates the fate of human nature and the times in the cracks of the decadent order. The story is compact and interlocking
The atmosphere of this novel is very well captured, the plot is intricately linked to each other and makes your heart itch, the characters are vivid, and the writing is smooth and flavorful!
