Hound Eight Ladles

Hound Bashi was born in the shadow of his mother’s death during a difficult labor. After being castrated in a fight as a pup, the scarred fighter poured all his lifelong hatred onto the veterinarian, spending three whole years howling curses at him from the clinic wall. But when his owner moved to the city and sold him to a dog dealer, the wheels of fate turned onto an unpredictable path.

Following the howls etched in his memory, the veterinarian found Bashi again, then wrote one ironclad rule into the adoption contract: “Never abuse him.” And so began a battle between toughness and tenderness. Traumatized by abandonment, Bashi escaped three times and tore at his new bandages with his teeth, yet curled up trembling when the veterinarian dressed his wounds late at night. This three-year tug-of-war finally gave way to warmth, as Grandma’s palm fan dispelled the gloom. With pickled plums and a faded velvet blanket, she created a bond that transcended species.

Over the next ten years, Bashi changed from a ferocious guard dog into a family member who shared every dawn and dusk. He learned to nudge sick Grandma with his nose to remind her to take her medicine, and to dig a neat mound of yellow earth with his paws at her funeral. Then he kept watch by her gravestone for ten springs and autumns. When his final whimper faded into the wind, people found half a moldy wheat cake beneath him: his last meal, saved for himself.

This story of scars and redemption uses a blend of toughness and tenderness to tell an epic tale of life that rises above hatred. When stubborn revenge meets a love that crosses the boundaries of life and death, Bashi spends twenty years proving that even the deepest wounds can blossom into a tenderness that protects.
