The Causal Chain series follows Fan Shouzheng, the son of the Fan family, a prominent business clan in nineteenth-century Hong Kong. As he investigates a series of murders, he uncovers hidden truths about his family and the era they lived in. Every incident is part of a cycle of cause and effect, and every outcome is brought about by a series of causes.
Seven Days to Steam Execution is the first case Fan Shouzheng encounters. While helping his good friend Chen Ping'an, he winds up aboard a steamer by chance and takes part in a deadly game. Twelve contestants wager their lives for a huge cash prize, and one by one they die. Who is the killer? What kind of conspiracy lies behind it all?
