“Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16). These are the words of Christ, the risen Christ, spoken just before he left this world. Nothing could be more important to humanity. We must pay the closest attention to them. These words carry the greatest possible consequences, for they set out the conditions for eternal bliss or misery, for life or death. Belief is the greatest grace that brings salvation; unbelief is the greatest sin, condemning a person to hell. The Law has warned of death for every kind of sin and has already pronounced a sentence of condemnation upon every person, because all have sinned. This sentence is so indisputable that it allows only one exception: if people do not believe, they will all be put to death.
