Across the vast firmament of history, certain figures shine with an enduring brilliance. Wang Yangming is one of them. With his extraordinary wisdom, profound thought, and legendary life, he left a bold and vivid mark on the long scroll of Chinese civilization, earning the admiration and remembrance of generations to come.
Wang Yangming, given name Shouren and courtesy name Bo'an, was from Yuyao, Zhejiang. Because he built a residence at Yangming Cave, he became known to later generations as Master Yangming. Born into a family of farmers and scholars, he showed an unusual character from an early age. He did not speak until he was five, but when he finally did, his words astonished everyone. From then on, he displayed a nimble mind and exceptional talent. At twelve, when his teacher asked him, “What is the highest pursuit in the world?” he answered with conviction, “To become a sage!” That reply was like a seed planted in his heart, giving rise to the lifelong aspiration that would define his extraordinary life.
Yet Wang Yangming’s journey toward sagehood was far from smooth. He went through what came to be called the “Five Obsessions,” successively immersing himself in chivalry, horseback riding and archery, literary composition, the pursuit of immortality, and Buddhism. These pursuits may seem like detours, but in truth they were an earnest exploration of life’s meaning and how to find peace of mind. They laid the groundwork for his later philosophical breakthrough. From the perspective of orthodox Confucian thought, these studies were not concerned with the fundamentals of the mind, body, and life. Yet those varied experiences gave him a deeper understanding of the world and himself.
After entering official service, Wang Yangming angered powerful figures by speaking out in defense of justice. He was imprisoned and, after receiving forty strokes of the rod, was demoted to Longchang in Guizhou. This remote, desolate, and lonely place became the turning point in his life...
The narrative is detailed, engaging, and the story is coherent. Some professors mentioned in their lectures that when Wang Shouren was born, he was the grandchild of his grandmother, old lady Cen, in her dream. This book was the grandchild of his grandfather, Wang Lun, in his dream. I haven't finished listening to the rest yet…
Gives a lot of inspiration
