Mountains Rise, Rivers Run Long, We Remember the Fallen Heroes

Synopsis of "Where Mountains Rise and Rivers Run, We Cherish the Fallen Heroes"

His life was an epic forged into legend by fate. As a clever, mischievous boy, he was entrusted by his father to a mysterious old mage to learn his craft. Over more than a decade of study, he mastered the extraordinary arts his master taught him. When the old mage passed away, he observed mourning for many days, reluctant to leave behind the years he had spent by his master’s side. Carrying his inherited skills and his longing with him, he set out on an uncertain journey.

After his entire family was slaughtered, he fled from afar to a place in Jiangxi surrounded by hills and waters. Burdened with a blood feud yet compassionate at heart, he traveled the countryside practicing his remarkable healing arts. With secret ointments he prepared late at night, he treated illnesses inside and out, curing chronic ailments. Whether the illness was serious or minor, patients recovered after two treatments at most, and often just one. He charged poor families nothing, asking only for a place to stay and a meal to fill his stomach.

When night fell over the mountains, he became an astonishing hunter. He needed neither a hunting rifle nor a torch. With extraordinary night vision and bare-handed fighting skills, he moved through the darkness with ease. Once, he came face-to-face with a tiger and fought it from the mountain ridge all the way down to the foot of the slope, holding its throat back with his own body until dawn. When the tiger’s claws tore his forehead, he simply chewed up some herbs and bandaged the wound, asking only that the villagers keep the tiger’s hide and bones.

From the old society through the 1970s in New China, he left a deep mark on his era through his unique way of life. But as the times changed, no one inherited his astonishing hunting skills or peerless medical arts. They became nothing more than a legend based on a true story, shining brightly across the river of history and telling of a solitary wanderer’s steadfastness and compassion.
