In 1941, the embers of the Songhu Battle still lingered, and the French Concession in Shanghai became an "isolated island". The national army's defense line in the mountainous area of southern Anhui was at war with the Japanese army. On the eve of the collapse of this old world, two young men with very different backgrounds - Amao, a 16-year-old street boy, and Zhang Weiguo, a 20-year-old private in the Central Army - had their fates intertwined because of a pocket watch with a broken handle engraved with "Serve the Country with Loyalty". Their stories connect the anti-Japanese leaflets of Lin Wanqiu, a female student in the French Concession, and the sulfa pill bottle of Gu Manshu, a field nurse in southern Anhui. Amidst the code words of the postman and the roar of artillery fire as the positions collapsed, they jointly compose a long song about survival, faith and redemption.
