The Fisherman's Song

On the banks of the Endless River, fisherman Ma Bosheng squatted on a bluestone slab, washing a wooden bucket as his thumb brushed the patches on his old straw rain cape.

No one knew that the hands that speared fish had once held the Book of Songs. Even fewer knew that tucked inside his coarse cloth shoe was the jade thumb ring of Chu Mowen, a prince of the previous dynasty. It was only when Wei Yue, a new teacher dressed in white as pale as feathers, tumbled into a snowdrift that, as if possessed, he carved the words “My heart is bright and true” into an umbrella handle. To his shock, he wanted to wager the rest of his life on this breath of fresh air.

On the day Wei Yue first arrived in Endless Village, the warmth of Ma Bosheng tying on his rain cape burned brighter than “There are trees on the mountain” from the Songs of Chu. This teacher, who had preached “restrain yourself and return to ritual” for ten years, insisted on taking that calloused hand in the pouring rain, protecting its owner despite the cries of “remnant of the imperial house.” When the challenge “Is love between men against propriety?” came crashing down, he tossed aside his brush and laughed coldly. “If love is a sin, then what of the ‘fair and graceful maiden’ in the Book of Songs?”

Their story was hidden in the seasons: the grassy scent on their sleeves while picking mulberries in spring, the hems deliberately splashed while fishing in summer, words carved into a peach pit but left unspoken beneath autumn maples, and an embrace before a snow-battered house in winter that sent pear blossoms tumbling down. Then a prison cart crushed the reeds, torches burned the fishing hut, and the moment Wei Yue was shoved into the river, Ma Bosheng finally understood: he could escape the palace walls, but not the tightest shackle of all, the word “love.”

There is no coercive romance here, only a slow simmer over the gentle flame of troubled times: trembling fingertips that avoid the lash marks while applying medicine, a peach pit clutched tight as someone argues their case in court, and Zhao Xian’s decade-long journey from shock to understanding.

The wind through the reeds and the waters of the Endless River both tell the same story: when fishermen’s songs meet the classics, love is no transgression. It is two souls claiming one another in the cracks of their age.
