The story takes place in Chunxi Town, an ancient city in the south of the Yangtze River, where there are old streets paved with bluestones and a gurgling river. The male protagonist Zhou Yan runs a wood carving studio called "Mu Xinju" deep in the old street, while the female protagonist Lin Wantang works as an ancient book restorer in the city museum. The two became acquainted because of a wood carving engraved with a mysterious cheongsam pattern, which was exactly the pattern on the jade pendant that Grandma Lin Wantang gave to her before she died. As their relationship deepened, they discovered that each other's ancestors had an unfinished relationship in the 1940s, and the cheongsam woman Zhou Yan often dreamed about when carving was exactly what Grandma Lin Wantang looked like when she was young.
