Southwestern border, 2023.

Bullets whistled past his ear. Su Tu growled and rolled behind a rock.

“Captain! IED at your three o’clock!” a teammate shouted through his earpiece.

Su Tu didn’t hesitate. He fired two quick shots to suppress the enemy, while the corner of his eye caught sight of a red light flashing on a homemade bomb on the dirt road to his right.

“Fall back! Move!” he roared into the radio, shoving the explosives expert beside him. “Go!”

His teammate stumbled backward, but Su Tu had already heard the fuse hissing.

There was no time.

He lunged at the bomb, covering it with his body, and yanked the pull tab on his tactical vest with his right hand.

Boom!

The world shattered in a blaze of white.
