Rust on the South Wind: Tales of Guancheng

Through the forty-year odyssey of Chen Shuisheng, an armless laborer, this story traces the transformation of southern China’s Dongguan, from endless rice paddies to a landscape crowded with factories. In stark, unsparing vignettes, it depicts ancestral halls turned into workshops, waves of strikes, crackdowns on vice, and factories shut down during the COVID pandemic. It lays bare landlord Huang Sisi’s greedy transformation, gangster Zhao Tietou’s evolution into organized crime, and the corruption of official Zhou Weimin’s family by power. Through recurring images of blood-soaked nylon cloth, debts passed along by pager, silicone-gloved hands touching corpses, and lithium battery cells burning bodies, it carves out a parable of humanity corroded by rust. As roaring bulldozers crush ancestral halls and conscience alike, the severed fingers, farewell letters, and silences lodged in the cracks of the assembly line crystallize in the rust of the times, becoming sharp questions aimed at modernity.
