Synopsis
During the Cangxuan era of the Three Realms, the God of War Yun Yi led the heavenly army to battle the Demon Venerable at the edge of the Nine Heavens. Bloodshed lit up the River of Stars, and demonic flames scorched the clouds. In the end, the Demon Venerable was defeated. But peace did not last long. Using a truce between the Three Realms as leverage, the Demon Venerable made a ruthless demand: Yun Yi, who had slain his three sons, must pay with his life, or the demon army would once again invade the mortal world and bring devastation to all.
The Heavenly Realm could not bear to sacrifice its guardian God of War. Negotiations collapsed, the demonic threat returned, and war raged across the mortal world as the order of the Three Realms teetered on the brink of collapse. To protect all living beings, Yun Yi volunteered to descend into the mortal realm and undergo tribulation. He had to understand “true love” over ten mortal lifetimes. Success would bring peace to the Three Realms; failure would mean the annihilation of his soul.
While inspecting the ruins of the mortal world after the war, Yun Yi found a little gosling beside a cold well in a ruined courtyard. Its feathers were snow-white, and its wings were as translucent as frost. The poor little thing was all alone, its down covered in mud, yet it gazed up at him with big, tearful eyes, its chirps full of dependence. Moved with pity, Yun Yi named it Yunjiu and brought it back to the Heavenly Realm.
After a thousand years, the little gosling cultivated an immortal body and became the lively, adorable Fairy Yunjiu. Grateful for his lifesaving kindness and harboring deep feelings for Yun Yi, she quietly accompanied him through nine cycles of reincarnation. But the joys and sorrows, partings and deaths of those nine lifetimes could not warm the heart that war had hardened. Yun Yi had grown numb to love and had yet to understand what true love was.
With the final lifetime of his tribulation approaching, the Heavenly Realm grew anxious. Defying the immortal rules, Yunjiu volunteered to relinquish some of her immortal power and descend to the mortal world. Her mission was to help Yun Yi find the woman destined for him and guide him to understand love so he could pass his trial. But Yunjiu’s heart belonged to the God of War. She had to bring him and another woman together while concealing her own surging feelings. When Yun Yi opened his heart to the woman “destined for him,” all she could do was bear the pain alone, as if her heart were being torn out.
