The story takes place in the poor and backward land of Northern Jiangsu. It tells the story of the troubled marriage of the male protagonist Zhang Dahe and the female protagonist Huang Qiuyue. In particular, Qiuyue, a rural woman living at the bottom, fights unyieldingly against her fate. There are also many touching stories of running around in pursuit of a happy life, being unable to stay in love, being oppressed by the secular world, and finally choosing to die. It shows the vicissitudes of the countryside in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
