On a world within a vast blue planet, the ruling class is obsessed with the power of the uncanny. Records show that uncanny research has a history stretching back three thousand years. Yet at some point, this civilization’s ongoing research was abruptly interrupted. All records were erased, with only a small amount of information retained by a few people at the top. In just a century, the world’s technology advanced rapidly, beginning with the fall of the dynasties. But those in power never abandoned their research into the uncanny. After obtaining fragments of forbidden knowledge, the Black Dragon Empire, a vast nation founded less than a century earlier, broke apart following the death of Shenting Yi and split into sixteen countries. The first four were Shanhai, Tuyou, Linghai, and Shangguan Ting. Shanhai and Tuyou became known as the two great nations of paranormal research. Their work opened a dimensional gate that did not exist in the real world, and the uncanny began to descend, starting with human experiments in Cloud City. Humanity shifted from researching the uncanny to surviving the age of the uncanny. The Night Wardens and others who made protecting their country their mission became humanity’s last line of defense in the age after technology.
