In 1942, Henan was parched for miles as drought and locusts ravaged the land. Wang Nannan, from the twenty-first century, transmigrated into the body of Chun Ni, an eighteen-year-old village girl. After they had eaten all the grass roots and tree bark, Chun Ni’s family and the villagers set out west in search of survival. Their destination was Xi’an, but they ultimately ended up in Yan’an.
From Xi’an to Yan’an: the rapid growth of the revolutionary base, the transformation of ordinary people’s lives and deaths amid natural and man-made disasters, and the fiery intersection of individual suffering and the struggle to save the nation.
