Three-and-a-Half-Year-Old Lucky Charm: Shanghai's Big Shots Line Up to Spoil Her

[Adorable child, doted on by everyone, Republican-era setting, lucky charm, cozy everyday life, alternate history, ghost friends] After Niannian’s birth parents die, a trafficker takes her to the foreign concession. Because she can see ghosts, she is abandoned. The Jiang family’s young heiress takes her home to the Jiang residence. Before long, the Jiang family’s eldest son wakes from his vegetative state and becomes the leader of the Green Gang. The second son stops being depressed, rises steadily through the ranks, and becomes the police commissioner. Grandmother’s migraines are cured! The housekeeper’s hen finally lays eggs! Even the birthmark on the adoptive mother’s best friend’s face disappears! Everyone envies the Jiang family for having a little lucky star. But Niannian has a secret she hasn’t told anyone: she has lots of ghost friends. The family’s life gets better and better! The bigwigs of Shanghai can’t sit still. Each one takes a number and eagerly waits in line to spoil Niannian. Her uncles compete fiercely in their respective fields, eager to give her every pretty little Western-style dress in the city. And Jiang Gong, known as the “Smiling Tiger” for his ruthless methods, gazes at her fondly. “Niannian, what story would you like to hear today?”
