The math teacher Wang Zhiguo’s roar exploded through the classroom. A piece of chalk flew straight into my forehead, stinging like fire. The entire class turned to stare at me, their gazes like countless steel needles pricking my back.
I slowly stood up, banging my knee against the desk with a thud. My deskmate, Ning Yuqing, frowned slightly and quietly shifted her desk away from mine.
“I spent a full twenty minutes explaining this problem, and you were asleep?” Wang Zhiguo pushed up his glasses, his eyes bulging behind the lenses. “Come up here and solve it. If you can’t, you’re not going home today!”
I dragged my feet to the blackboard, clutching the chalk but unable to bring myself to write. The function problem on the board looked like gibberish. I couldn’t even understand the question. Whispers came from behind me, and Zhang Zihao’s group laughed the loudest.
“Brother Long was hauling bricks all night again, huh?” “With brains like his, he can’t even count the bricks he’s hauling!”
My ears burned scarlet, and sweat slicked my fingers around the chalk. Just then, a small note was quietly slipped into my palm. I glanced to the side. Ning Yuqing was looking down at her book, her long eyelashes casting a shadow across her cheek, as if she hadn’t passed me the note.
