An experimental accident sends modern graduate student Zhou Wen to the era of Qin Shi Huang, where he rises from a condemned prisoner to a "scientific sage" who changes the fate of the empire.
After a quantum experiment goes wrong, Zhou Wen transmigrates to the outskirts of Xianyang in 219 BCE. His modern knowledge lets him predict a solar eclipse and escape execution, and Qin Shi Huang regards him as an "extraordinary man" and keeps him at court. Faced with the Qin dynasty's harsh laws and rampant plagues, Zhou Wen uses science to improve agriculture, establish a medical system, and build the Lingqu Canal, gradually earning the First Emperor's trust.
Meeting Li Wan, the daughter of an official historian, gives Zhou Wen a confidante and true love amid the whirlpool of power. But the eunuch Zhao Gao sees him as a thorn in his side. After the First Emperor dies, Zhao Gao stages a coup, forces Fusu to his death, and installs Huhai as emperor. Zhou Wen is forced to flee to the frontier, where he forms a new army using modern military principles and joins forces with Meng Tian's former troops to fight his way back to Xianyang.
From repeating crossbows and gunpowder to movable type, from the imperial examination system to reforms of the commandery-county system, Zhou Wen wields science as a sword and civilization as a shield, rebuilding the foundations of Great Qin. He and Li Wan establish the "New Qin Academy," blending modern knowledge with ancient civilization, and ultimately create a vast, technologically advanced empire spanning Europe and Asia.
