Extreme Evil Paradise

The Three Hindrances are the hindrance of demons, the hindrance of karma, and the hindrance of calamities.

Delusion born of greed, anger, and ignorance gives rise to the hindrance of demons. The karma of the five heinous acts and the ten evils gives rise to the hindrance of karma. Suffering the three calamities and eight hardships brings the hindrance of calamities.

The Ten Evils are these: four evils of speech: frivolous speech, false speech, harsh speech, and divisive speech.

Three evils of the mind: greed, anger, and ignorance. Three evils of the body: killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct. Together, these make the Ten Evils.

All who commit the Three Hindrances and Ten Evils must personally experience them in embodied form: “wind calamity,” “water calamity,” “fire calamity,” and “thunder calamity.”

They will be plagued by the Eight Hardships: first, the difficulty of being born human;

second, the difficulty of being reborn as a man rather than a woman;

third, the difficulty of having a complete body;

fourth, the difficulty of being born in the Central Land;

fifth, the difficulty of encountering a righteous ruler;

sixth, the difficulty of being endowed with a benevolent nature;

seventh, the difficulty of living in a peaceful country;

eighth, the difficulty of encountering the Three Treasures.
