Lin Xiao, a retired veteran, was about to start a new chapter in modern society when a mysterious celestial phenomenon unexpectedly transmigrated him to the turbulent years of Emperor Renzong's reign in the Northern Song. Newly arrived in Bianjing, penniless and unable to speak the local language, he is pursued by soldiers who mistake his strange behavior for that of a madman. At his most desperate moment, he stumbles into the garden of the Su family, Bianjing's richest household, and fate brings him together with their gentle and charming daughter, Su Yao.
Drawn to Lin Xiao's unique qualities, Su Yao defies convention to help him out of his predicament and gives him a place to stay with her family. Lin Xiao begins a life with the Sus that is both heartwarming and full of mishaps. As he learns the customs and language of the Song Dynasty, his modern way of thinking leads to one hilarious blunder after another. Meanwhile, he uses modern knowledge to advise the Su family's business, earning everyone's respect. In the process, affection grows between him and Su Yao, and love quietly takes root.
But their peaceful life is short-lived. War breaks out along the border, and Lin Xiao makes a name for himself with his exceptional military skills, bringing envy and treachery in their wake. The Liao spy Xiao Yichen schemes in secret, plunging Lin Xiao into a crisis of trust and even kidnapping Su Yao to force him to leave. Risking everything for love, Lin Xiao rescues her, but is gravely wounded, and their relationship reaches an impasse.
Yet the wheels of fate keep turning. While recovering from his injuries, Lin Xiao unexpectedly uncovers a shocking plot by the Liao and Western Xia to invade the Song. Joining forces with Zhao Xu, the nephew of Emperor Renzong, he braves countless hardships to gather evidence and expose the truth at court. He regains the court's trust and takes on the responsibility of defending his homeland. Su Yao, too, is moved by Lin Xiao's devotion to his country and its people.
In the end, can Lin Xiao and Su Yao's love, beset by one twist after another, find its happy ending? The answers await in this legendary journey across time.
