From the time Qin Shi Huang united the land, China has had twenty-four dynasties and twenty-four founding emperors. Among them were emperors who rose from rags to rule the realm, inept rulers who kept their small corner of the world afloat by pouring money into their dynasties, benevolent rulers of prosperous times who inherited the throne through connections from the previous dynasty, and great leaders who worked hard by clinging to the coattails of their elder brothers.
At pivotal moments in history, these founders either swept away the old and built anew or picked up the pieces, each leaving their mark on the course of Chinese civilization. They achieved great things, paving the way for ethnic integration, cultural continuity, and institutional progress. They also made mistakes, bringing hardship to the people through poor decisions and the limitations of their class. Yet their lives, intertwined, form a grand epic of China’s development, allowing later generations to seek out the patterns of history amid its rises and falls, its glories and its shame, and to draw strength to press forward.
Though all success and failure ultimately vanish like a dream, there is no denying that these emperors stood higher, saw farther, did better, and left a deeper mark than ordinary people. Their talents, personalities, and strength of will all influenced the course of history. Erase that, and history becomes impossible to understand.
I have been well-read in the classics and histories since childhood, and though I have passed the age of sixty, I cannot let go of my fascination with the profound, weighty, turbulent, and dazzling human history of the past several thousand years. So, despite my humble abilities, I have chosen chapters on the founding emperors of successive dynasties, seeking to discover and understand the cultural heritage hidden beneath its cracks and mottled surface.
These pages are full of absurdities, yet every line is streaked with tears. Who says the author is foolish? Those who understand will know its meaning. Open the book and experience it with me!
Interesting, very interesting
