Just as Jiang Yunchu was about to get promoted, receive a raise, and buy a house, she died suddenly from overwork. In a blink, she transmigrated into a period novel she'd only heard about from her best friend, and hadn't even remembered the male lead's name.
She was an unmarried fiancée who had fled from the mainland to the mainland. Her fiancé was forced by his family to marry the original heroine. After the wedding, the villainess made a scene every day until everyone hated her. In the end, the male lead gave her a hefty settlement, and they divorced.
Jiang Yunchu thought, This is... this is great!
She had food and a roof over her head, plus a huge settlement coming. Wasn't that better than staying home and waiting for her uncle and aunt to sell her off?
On the day of their formal meeting, the steady, reserved man wore a black suit. Tall and composed, he seemed less like he was on a blind date and more like he was negotiating a major business investment with her.
He even gave her 200,000 Hong Kong dollars in spending money each month, and gifted her a villa, company shares, a yacht...
Jiang Yunchu happily accepted it all. Now she just had to wait for the male lead to ask for a divorce.
After they married, she rubbed her aching waist and looked at her bargain husband in confusion, feeling that something was off.
Then one day, her husband's cousin got drunk and showed up at her home, crying that he regretted pushing this arranged marriage onto him.
The man wore a bathrobe and looked thoroughly impatient. Thin red scratch marks had appeared on his arms and neck. Sitting on the sofa, he looked at the cousin coldly and said in a flat voice:
“Call her sister-in-law.”
Reader's note:
1. The setting is Hong Kong in 1978. The story tries to recreate the era, but includes plenty of fictional details.
2. Neither the heroine nor the hero is a good person. They're both self-interested.
