Sleeping Before the Spring Snow

The ginkgo leaves of seventeen never made it into his workbook. By twenty-nine, the winter snow had turned the tips of her hair white. From the liberal arts classroom to the teacher’s desk, Cheng Yu’an kept the name “Jiang Tinglan” hidden as the quietest punctuation mark in her youth. The boy who was always working out the future on scrap paper would never know what twelve years of burning longing were concealed in the two cans of hot drinks she clutched when they met again at a convenience store. When the heart monitor beside her hospital bed traced a flat line, the fluttering hearts crushed at the edges of graduation photos, the chestnuts that had gone cold at the subway entrance, and the unfinished confession on the back of a medical record finally joined a yellowed class directory, becoming star trails in two parallel universes that would never meet.
