On the surface, there is lively entertainment, singing and dancing, Western-style buildings and alleys coexist, rickshaws rush on the asphalt road, various powers compete here, and the concession demarcates a "state within a state"; but on the inside, there is a turbulent undercurrent, warlords are fighting, gangs are rampant, revolutionary forces are quietly growing underground, and workers and students are eager to break this decadent old order and find a new way for the country.
