When Wang Haoyu received word that his grandmother was critically ill, he was stuck in the city’s morning rush hour. Outside his car window stretched an endless steel jungle and crowds of hurried people. But his father’s anxious voice on the phone struck like lightning, transporting him back to the distant village of Yunliang. It was the hometown he had been away from for years. In his memories, the village nestled among green hills, shrouded in wisps of morning mist and as peaceful as a hidden paradise. But when he arrived at the village entrance at dusk, the sight before him made his blood run cold.
Thick, ink-black white fog hung like an impenetrable curtain, tightly enveloping the entire village. A bone-chilling cold emanated from the mist, and every breath felt as if shards of ice were scraping his throat. Wang Haoyu stumbled into the village, but didn’t encounter a single person along the way. The familiar outlines of the houses flickered in and out of view through the eerie fog, as if they might disappear at any moment.
