Li Keyong, a member of the Shatuo tribe, had repeatedly made military exploits since suppressing the Huangchao Uprising and was awarded the title of King of Jin. His son Li Cunxu "received three arrows" to conquer Khitan in the north, conquer Youyan in the east, and destroy Zhu Liang in the south to proclaim himself emperor. The establishment of the Later Tang Dynasty brought an end to the more than 40-year struggle between Liang and Jin for hegemony.
