In the late autumn of the Lizong Emperor's reign in the Southern Song Dynasty, the land was riven by turmoil.
Wuyin Village lay at the border of Zhejiang and Fujian, surrounded by mountains and shrouded in dense fog year-round. A crooked locust tree at the village entrance stood like a spirit-summoning banner, enclosing the village in a stifling, oppressive world.
This ghostly village existed between the realms of yin and yang. Its villagers were restless spirits who sustained their existence by devouring the life force of the living. A secret sacrificial rite held at the third watch lay hidden within the village, shaping its bizarre laws of survival.
Shen Yanqiu, a scholar on his way to sit the imperial examinations, strayed into the fog-shrouded deserted village and found strangeness everywhere. The villagers' ashen faces, the children playing soundlessly, and the ancient well dripping with blood all hinted at something inhuman.
At the third watch, everyone in the village mysteriously vanished, and the ancestral hall's candles lit themselves. Following the sounds to investigate, Shen Yanqiu witnessed green-faced, tusked villagers performing a bloody flesh sacrifice and discovered that the entire village was made up of the dead.
He tried to escape but fell into a ghostly maze. After a mysterious woman saved him, he learned the truth about the village. During his final flight before dawn, Shen Yanqiu saw his own rotting corpse at the village entrance and realized, to his horror, that he had long been trapped in a cycle of death.
As blood-red characters appeared on a stone stele beneath the locust tree at the village entrance, the whole village turned into a graveyard in the morning light. Shen Yanqiu finally understood that he had become one of the dead, doomed to remain forever in this man-eating village.
