As war engulfs the land, Qing Shuang, master of the Xuanji Pavilion, learns that ascension through martial cultivation was a thousand-year-old lie. Each time the Ninefold Heavenly Gate opens, the Demon Venerable's seal weakens by a tenth, and the entire Heaven's Secrets Manual is inscribed on the skulls of successive pavilion masters. Alongside Mu Huaizhou, the prince who has been her childhood companion, and Xie Yunzhao, her senior fellow disciple who has fallen to demonic ways, she confronts the karmic debts of eight reincarnations, only to discover that her twin sister, Qing Xue, has already become the Demon Venerable's vessel.
Mu Huaizhou gouges out his own eyes and slays the dragon, using imperial bones to redraw the mountains-and-rivers formation. Xie Yunzhao endures the agony of soul-devouring and refines half his soul into the Imperial Jade Seal. Qing Shuang forges a sword from the corpses of eight lifetimes, only to glimpse the true evil of Heaven's Dao at the ninth Heavenly Gate. On the day of her rebirth, Qing Xue's fading consciousness appears amid the karmic flames. The swaddling-clothes bells they exchanged beneath the moon all those years ago were meant to let her sister defy fate.
In the end, Qing Shuang merges the divine souls of nine lifetimes to mend the rift in the heavens, Mu Huaizhou freezes the imperial mausoleum to suppress the earth's ley lines, and Xie Yunzhao becomes a star to guard the Guixu. A century later, the East China Sea tide rises. A blind zither player knocks upon a weathered monument to mountains and seas, and a newly hatched phoenix egg reflects the peach blossoms falling at the moment the three first met. In the monument's cracked inscription, the words "Different paths, same destination" glimmer faintly with golden light...
The female martial arts works are quite eye-catching. The opening chapter is quite exciting and contains a lot of foreshadowing. I hope the author will not miss any holes and fill them all in!
