Tan Li, a middle-aged man from a small county town hardly known beyond its own region, lacks sound judgment and has little experience of the world. He is lured down a path of get-rich-quick schemes, leverage, and financial speculation, and eventually finds himself in debt, struggling to turn his life around and climb out. This story exposes the harsh realities of society, reveals how difficult life can be, and calls for greater attention to vulnerable groups and reform of the society we live in.
