A History of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms

The Romance of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms paints a sweeping portrait of a turbulent half-century. The story begins with the unlikely romance between Zhu Wen and Zhang Hui amid the chaos. Burning with ambition, Zhu Wen joins Huang Chao's army, while Zhang Hui holds down the home front, and their love is tested by the flames of war. Zhu Wen establishes Later Liang, and Zhang Hui supports him as a virtuous empress, but she cannot prevent his decline into folly in his later years. Beset by internal strife and foreign enemies, Later Liang ultimately falls.

Thereafter, Li Cunxu establishes Later Tang. At first, he is full of confidence, but his favoring of actors and Empress Liu's power grab lead to loyal officials such as Guo Chongtao being falsely accused, sending the state into a rapid decline. Li Siyuan takes the throne in a coup and ushers in a reign of peace and prosperity, yet he too cannot prevent his sons from fighting over the succession. Seeking to become emperor, Shi Jingtang cedes the Sixteen Prefectures of Yanyun, reducing Later Jin to a vassal of the Khitan. Jing Yanguang tries to reverse this humiliating diplomacy, but provokes a Khitan invasion, and Later Jin soon falls. Liu Zhiyuan establishes Later Han, but the young ruler Liu Chengyou has senior officials executed, forcing Guo Wei to rebel and replace the dynasty with Later Zhou. After taking the throne, Chai Rong campaigns across the south and north, launching three expeditions against Southern Tang and a northern campaign against the Khitan. He seems poised to unite the realm, but dies young. Zhao Kuangyin seizes the opportunity to stage the Chenqiao Mutiny and usher in the Northern Song.

The book not only depicts the grand sweep of changing regimes and constant warfare, but also portrays vivid characters struggling, making choices, and navigating tangled emotions amid the chaos. From the lofty ambitions and political machinations of emperors and generals to the joys, sorrows, and yearning for survival of ordinary people, every detail springs to life on the page, presenting a vivid picture of this turbulent age and drawing readers into a dramatic, legendary chapter of history.
